Labor and Delivery Nursing

Nurses working on the Labor and Delivery unit are certified in BLS (Basic Life Support, at the Provider Level), and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and sometimes, ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). Quite simply Labor and Delivery nurses love their job, as they are present for the beginning of life. Nurses on this unit are often with the mother from the moment labor begins to the post-partum period (depending on the size of the hospital). This area of nursing services a high-risk population and nurses should carry their own medical malpractice insurance. Labor and Delivery nurses coach the mother through labor and set up the monitors to assess the baby through the birthing process. Nurses on this unit must be able to react quickly in case of mother or fetal distress and be prepared for emergency caesarean sections. After the baby is born, nurses may expect to care for both mother and baby until discharge.
