Endoscopy / GI Lab Nursing
The GI Lab nurse enjoys a side-by-side close working relationship with physicians. These nurses assist doctors by monitoring a patient's response to procedures such as colonoscopies, endoscopic retrograde cholangio ancreatography (ERCP) and all other endoscopic procedures. The nurses may be responsible for administering conscious sedation (a twilight sleep). Most GI Lab positions prefer an experienced critical care nurse, certified in ACLS, in these roles. It is important for the GI Lab nurse to have excellent assessment and IV skills. The day to day duties of this position will include pre and post-procedure care, set up and tear down of the procedure room, and close monitoring of the patient post procedure. Most GI Labs have a team of nurses whose responsibilities may shift from day to day, but who are primarily responsible for one area on their shift. GI Lab nurses enjoy primarily a day shift position, Monday through Friday, with on call hours. In an on-call situation, the nurse may expect to perform all roles that in a normal situation, would require a team.
