Director of Nursing Nursing
The Director of Nursing is an experienced Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's or higher degree in Nursing. Many DONs also have an MBA which reinforces their business management skills. The DON position, for the most part, is a non hands-on role in healthcare. DONs must be familiar with state and federal regulations, and stay abreast of new laws governing extended care facilities, or hospitals, depending on where they are employed. This is a position that RNs work into, usually after a few years spent in direct patient care. An RN aspiring to this role should sit on committees and have some supervisory experience before applying to an opening. This position is typically a day shift position, Monday through Friday, with a 24/7 pager. DONs report directly to the CEO of the facility and sit on management committees. Continuing education units (CEUs) are also required to maintain their RN license, even though this position is typically not involved in direct patient care.
