LTS is seeking an experienced and dedicated Disease Control Registered Nurse to join the ICHD team. LTS collaborates with the Ingham County Health Department (ICHD) in Michigan to support its immunization programs, enhancing the health of local communities.

Position Overview:
The Disease Control Registered Nurse, under the supervision of the Communicable Disease Control Supervisor, investigates and monitors communicable disease reports, including measles, hepatitis, and tuberculosis. The role involves implementing public health actions mandated by health codes, consulting with healthcare professionals and institutions, and educating the community on disease prevention. The nurse also provides after-hours availability to maintain access to public health services and respond to emergencies promptly.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Adhere to ICHD, OSHA safety standards, and infection control policies and protocols.
• Investigate, evaluate, and assess communicable disease occurrences, verifying reports and developing action plans in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.
• Deliver comprehensive nursing services, including assessment, education, counseling, and prevention for individuals, families, and groups, while maintaining accurate records and reports.
• Serve as a consultant for staff, assisting with problem-solving and suggesting treatment alternatives; regularly engage in discussions about disease control strategies.
• Actively participate in pandemic response activities, including assessment, investigation, prevention, surveillance, education, and action plan implementation.
• Monitor and provide case management for clients with tuberculosis, designing tailored care plans for complex cases such as multi-drug-resistant strains or those with socioeconomic challenges.
• Oversee the Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) Clinic, ensuring consistent and effective treatment regimens and monitoring medical progress.
• Conduct investigations to locate and manage cases, using various communication methods and maintaining thorough records.
• Address inquiries from healthcare providers and community members, assessing situations and providing guidance based on established protocols.
• Work with diverse communities, including non-English speaking clients, to overcome barriers to healthcare access.
• Represent the agency on community boards and task forces, advocating for disease control measures and assessing community needs to inform public health policies.
• Develop and present internal training programs (e.g., bloodborne pathogens, HIV counseling, tuberculosis, and bioterrorism) to meet OSHA and CEU requirements.
• Research, organize, and implement communicable disease protocols, evaluating procedures, and assisting in policy development.
• Serve as a liaison between the Health Department and external agencies, mediating client and public health concerns.
• Provide on-call support to ensure continuous access to public health services and rapid response to events, developing action plans as necessary.
• Act as a bioterrorism resource, developing screening tools, and coordinating intervention strategies.
• Educate healthcare facilities about infection control regulations and respond to inquiries from personnel.
• Ensure client records comply with HIPAA standards and maintain confidentiality. Educate clients and families on privacy rights regarding medical information.
• Prepare reports, analyze data, and create educational materials to support the Health Department’s initiatives and quality assurance efforts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, preferably in communicable disease control.
• Active RN license in the State of Michigan.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
• Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
• Self-motivated with robust problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to pass a background check and hold a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
• Willingness to travel as required.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors for extended periods.
• Capable of sitting, standing, squatting, bending, kneeling, and walking for long periods.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. unassisted.
• Ability to perform gross and fine motor functions and maintain sensory functions.
• Must be able to work in a latex-safe environment.
• Must meet physical and medical evaluation standards, including respirator use.
• Exposure to infectious diseases and potential hazards such as needle pricks and adverse weather conditions.
