Director of Nursing

Responsible for the total nursing care of Residents and the accuracy of nursing care records in partnership with unit coordinators and nursing staff, and in compliance with recognized standards, federal, state and licensing regulations, Home policies and in accordance with the Home’s model of care.
Total Nursing Care:
• Assure excellent total nursing care to Residents in compliance with recognized standards, federal, state and licensing regulations and Home policies.
• Assure a comprehensive plan of care is established and implemented for each resident and review according to state and federal regulatory standards.
• Assure residents are seen on a timely basis by their medical doctors. Coordinate and monitor ancillary Resident services internally and externally. Assure completion of discharge and transfer planning.
• Work closely with Clinical Nurse Manager to assure the total Home nursing needs. Communicate daily with Nursing Liaison to share Resident information.
• Participate in care conferences.
• Complete pharmacy recommendation reviews.
• Assure complete medical record reviews.
• Provide emergency treatment.
• Participate in selection of prospective Residents.
Staff Supervision:
• Provide direct supervision to medical records and nursing staff, including assignment of duties, monitoring performance, follow-up, direction and correction.
• Delegate and monitor non-nursing responsibilities to other staff consistent with their training, experience, competence and legal authorization, and within Home policy. Assure and assist nurses with duties as needed, especially toward end of shift.
• Complete formal performance evaluations for all nursing staff as scheduled.
• Participate in recruitment, interviews and selection of nursing personnel, recommending hiring and termination.
• Assure and assist with in-service, new staff orientation and new nurse orientation.
• Responsible for overseeing nurse and TMA scheduling.
Policy/Program Management and Administration:
• Monitor timely completion of MDS & care plan schedule and report daily to Administrator.
• Communicate daily with facility Administrator.
• Provide problem-solving assistance while promoting a calm and tranquil environment.
• Attend Medicare A meetings.
• Policy and Program Management: Quality Assurance, QAPI, Infection Control, Emergency Preparedness, Safe Resident Handling, compliance and other nursing programs. Establish and routinely revise general nursing care policies and procedures, developing policy and procedure manuals and written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
• Assure compliance of medical records in accordance with State and Federal guidelines, Home policies and standards of practice, meeting with any consultants.
• Participate in planning, decision-making and budgeting for nursing care.
• Attend meetings and continuing education as required.
• Model and promote safety awareness with residents, volunteers and employees.
• Practice and support Home policies.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education and Experience
Current registration with the Minnesota Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in good standing and 5 years similar administrative experience in a nursing home/geriatric setting or equivalent.
• Willingness to support, promote and model the core philosophy of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
• Working knowledge of all State and Federal regulations related to long-term care.
• Ability to identify and effectively resolve problems/issues, including issues of nursing practice and staff performance.
• Ability to promote a spirit of respect and cooperation among residents and employees.
• Ability to work a schedule that occasionally changes to meet the needs of the Home.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse population, individually and in groups.
• Refined leadership, interpersonal and time management skills. Ability to work with minimal direction independently and as a member of a team.
• Working knowledge of computers, including MS Word, Excel and electronic record systems.
