Job Description:
· Worked on a 52-bed MedSurg unit with all private rooms
· Required to maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification was required
· Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification was a plus for some staff
· Nurse-patient ratios were 1:6-7, primarily 1:7 for both day and night shifts
· Utilized Sunrise EMR for patient documentation
· Charge Nurse took a full patient assignment, supported by a Clinical Assistant (CA) working 40 hours per week (half of the time on the floor with patients, other half in the office)
· Worked alongside 4-6 CNA's per shift with nurse-aide ratios of 1:10-12
· Participated in an every-other-weekend schedule (3 weekends out of a 6-week rotation), with day shift on Sat/Sun and night shift on Fri/Sat
· Monitored remote telemetry as needed, with monitoring done by a different unit
· RN's were not required to read cardiac strips, but could read them if they had experience
· Administered various drips, including Heparin, occasional Lasix, PCA with MSO4, and Ativan gtt, but no cardiac gtts or insulin drips
· Managed patients on Bipap (intermittent only), Cpap, and High Flow oxygen
· Hospitalist in-house 24/7; Intensivist available in the ICU 24/7; residence also in-house 24/7
· Collaborated with the IV Team and PICC Team in-house 24/7; RN's assessed IV sites but did not initiate IV lines
· Respiratory Therapy was available 24/7 in-house
· Pharmacy services were available 24/7 and managed with Pyxis systems
· · Floated to other MedSurg, MedSurg/Oncology units, and occasionally IMC, but was primarily assigned to MedSurg overflow (no gtts)
· Underwent general hospital orientation and 2 full shifts of unit-specific orientation
· Managed patients with a variety of conditions including ortho post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), general post-ops (gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomies), and medical diagnoses such as COPD, cerebral palsy, pneumonia, and cellulitis
· Hemodialysis services were provided on the floor; experience with peritoneal dialysis was highly preferred for travelers
Job Requirements
· At least 2 years Medical-Surgical needed.
· Active WV RN license is required.
· BLS from AHA is required.
· ACLS is required.(Preffered)
· NIHSS is required.
· Covid Card required.
