Catheterization Laboratory Nursing

Most often this nursing position is performed in a hospital setting, although outpatient cardiologists' offices may also have a cath lab. ACLS certification is required for the cardiac cath lab nurse. This position is highly sought after by experienced cardiology nurses as the hours are typically day shift, Monday thru Friday with some days and weekends spent on call. Because the hours are particularly conducive to personal time and nurses rarely leave these positions, this specialty has relatively few openings. The RN in this specialty needs good assessment and IV skills and proficiency in reading cardiac monitors. Strong pre- and post-op monitoring skills are required. Prior experience as a cath lab nurse is preferred, but some facilities are willing to train nurses who have telemetry or critical care experience. This specialty requires a close working relationship with cardiologists. The cath lab nurse will assist doctors with procedures such as cardiac caths, pacemakers and stent placements, depending on the facility. Patient clientele usually ranges from the middle-aged to the elderly.
